Oct. 3 - Nov. 3, 2008: Maggie Hills: Blunderland
Things don't always work out as we expect them to. BLUNDERLAND, a new set of paintings by London-based painter Maggie Hills explores this sense of the surprising ordinary.
Scenes from postcards and calendars become the backdrops for unexpected glimpses of life. As in Constable's paintings of English country life, nostalgic chocolate-box images mask disturbing social commentary. Incongruous modernist buildings and sculptures dot disorientingly lush landscapes, creating tableaux of beauty, sadness, loss, the disturbing and the bizarre.
